This past month LongStickMiddie.com took a few minutes to chat with MLL (Chesapeake Bayhawks) and NLL (Washington Stealth) Champion Kyle Hartzell to talk lax shop. For more info, questions or comments email: info@longstickmiddie.com

LSM: Kyle, you’ve had a professional lacrosse year that was nothing short of spectacular. How did it feel winning an NLL and MLL Championship in 2010?

KH: One word Unreal! to accomplish all of that in one year is something I will never forget, guys play in both of those leagues and never win a championship to do it in my third year is just unreal.

LSM: Which was sweeter NLL or MLL?

KH: I cannot compare the two.

LSM: You were selected as the MLL Championship Weekend MVP for your shutdown defense. Did you have any idea you were being considered after the semi-finaLperformance against Paul Rabil?

KH: I had no clue. I just go out there and try and play my best.

LSM: And you train with Rabil on a regular basis, correct?

KH: We train together with our trainer Jay Dyer a couple times a month

LSM: Do you think knowing him as a person and training partner made your battle that much more intense?

KH: Not really he is very competitive and so am I. I think when both of us buckle the chinstrap we give a 110% regardless of who we are playing.

LSM: Growing up, who were your mentors/idols in the game of lacrosse?

KH: The Powell and Gait brothers – loved watching those guys.

LSM: What’s your favorite check?

KH: Over the head.

LSM: Your Rusty Gate on Ryan Boyle was featured as the LSM Check Of The Month in August. Where does that honor rank within your NCAA, NLL, MLL Championships and Accolades?

KH: Doesn’t compare to any of them.

LSM: Ouch.

KH: It was just a great check and an awesome highlight real, but that doesn’t win championships.

LSM: Fair enough… Can you describe how you set up the check? Did you have it planned or did Boyle just end up in the wrong place at the right time?

KH: I initially was just going to play body, but when I brought my stick in front of him I realized how far he was hanging it and decided to throw it then.

LSM: By the way, congrats on your win in Hawaii with Wimmer Solutions.

KH: Thanks.

LSM: How does that atmosphere compare to that of other tournaments like Vail or Lake Placid?

KH: Hawaii Is an unbelievable place. Playing with legends like Gary Gait and Ryan
Powell in paradise is just awesome.

LSM: Looks pretty laid back (pun intended). Did you find that guys were playing as hard as they might in a pro or world level game?

KH: When we played the Crease Monkeys, who is another stacked team, I think everyone went hard that game.

LSM: Any dirty checks thrown by you or other poles out there?

KH: I was throwing some junk nothing special.

LSM: Kyle, you continue to represent LSM, your current teams and the game of lacrosse with class and unparalleled work ethic. Congrats on your success and send us more vids of some nasty checks!
